Looking for Watts Link

Postby ND4SPDLSC » Fri Dec 16, 2016 10:36 pm

I believe the late and great Art Bailey knew a gentleman in SoCal that had prepped a Watts link for the VII and was in the midst of selling it but I don't think it materialized. Does anyone know this person?

I hadn't heard of that, but there are lots of rear suspension choices for the Fox 8.8 rearend. I recall seeing two or more Watts link choices, but the consensus was to go with the Panhard Bar instead. Art built his own PHB as you likely know about. I bought the MM kit for a Fox rear, but never used it. I decided the wider Mark VII frame rails should have a better mounting setup than the Mustang version.

What are you planning to do with your car? I also considered using a Panther chassis rear IRS suspension, or the SN95 Mustang IRS. But the 1992 XR7 rear I bought I never got around to doing anything with, and I changed plans to the PHB. The Cobra IRS might be the cleanest way to go, but those are getting rare now, and more expensive I think.

The IRS swap is a possibility but less much less likely. It becomes more of an issue setting up control arms and figuring out what to do with the air springs, which I want to keep. Years ago, I would have been more keen on a crazy modification, but I'm more interested in trying to finish up the car now and focus time and resources on other projects. The panhard bar is an OK option. You just get some secondary horizontal forces because the suspension is forced to travel in an arc with the rod. It's enough that you can bias the car going around a hard corner flipping the bar and mounts. I won't know if I will notice until it's on the car but if I do notice it would bother me enough that I would redo it. The Watts link has no horizontal forces and is a better bet but W.V. Kelly has gotten my ear on a Mumford link which is better still. At this point though, I am most interested in something that can just bolt into the car(s).

The late 90's big Fords had a Watt's Link in them too, I always liked seeing them on a rack at the dealership. I never looked at them hard to judge their strength, but I wonder if any of those parts could be adapted, being an 8.8 rearend.

That's two steps more than using the SEARCH feature at the top of the page :)
